Our History

Curl for a Cause started in 2006 as Curl for the Cure, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, and as well as the
Oncology Unit as Groves Memorial Community Hospital. Year six saw us changing direction, selecting local charities to
benefit from the funds raised at Curl For A Cause. This year we have partnered with Aboyne Rural Hospice and all funds
raised will go to their fundraising efforts to bring hospice care to Wellington County.

In March of 2020, we were all ready to host Curl for a Cause when the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to change course
just 2 weeks before the event was to take place. Several curlers had already raised pledges and businesses had
purchased advertising and donated items for the auction. Programs and t-shirts were printed and some had already
been distributed. Eventually, we hosted an online auction and were still able to raise $26, 561 for our charities. Three
years later, Curl for a Cause made a very successful return. In 2024 we’re back for our 17th annual Curl for a Cause.

How Do We Raise Funds?

You might be wondering; how do we raise funds for Curl for a Cause?
1- We sell advertisements in our Event Program.
2- We sell advertisements in the form of logos on the back of our event t-shirts.
3- Each curler must raise a minimum of $100.00 in pledges, and most curlers raise much more!
4- We host an online auction of donated items and gift cards from local businesses.
5- We have corporate sponsors.
6- We have so many generous community members and businesses who donate their time, talents, the food
you’re eating, etc. so the money we raise goes straight to our charities.

Mission Statement
Our purpose is to educate curlers, their friends, and families about the work of local charities and to support these charities with the funds we raise. Encouraging philanthropy in our community is an important part of our work.  (May 2014)
